Recording messages:
To record a message, you have to use two commands:
1. The
RecordMessage
command which initializes and starts the recording.
2. The
ContRecordMessage
command, which can return status information about the current recording
or stops the current recording.
Warning
, the host has not to stop a recording again when the
CHIPSET had to stop a recording by himself. E.g., by a memory full condition or by a timeout of the
recording. In both these cases, the CHIPSET stops the recording himself. If the host sends a command
to stop an already finished recording then the results are unpredictable and can even lead to the loss of
messages!
After stopping the recording, you should return in
Idle
mode, by sending the
Idle
command.
For the
RecordMessage
command, the most important input argument is the “A” flag. If this flag is set
to zero then the recording will start immediately after the CHIPSET has received the
RecordMessage
command and will include eventual silence before the caller starts to speak. If this flag is set to one
however, the recording will start automatically after the VAD energy level threshold has exceeded its
preset threshold (see also the
SetThresholdLevels
command). The main advantage is that the silence
before the caller starts to speak is not recorded. This saves some external memory space and has the
added advantage that by starting the playback of a message the user immediately hears the message
instead of an undefined period of silence. By default, this flag should be set to one.
If the
RecordMessage
command returns with the “M” flag set to one, then this means that there is no
available external storage memory to record a message. Therefore the recording procedure has not been
started and you may not continue by sending the
ContRecordMessage
command. The CHIPSET
remains in
Idle
mode. The user will have to delete some messages, followed by a garbage collection
before any new recordings can be made.
Once the recording has been started, you can monitor the line by sending the
ContRecordMessage
command with the tailcut factor set to 255. Besides returning information flags about the condition of the
telephone line it also returns information flags concerning the progress of the recording itself
(information like a timeout condition, memory full condition or a warning time indicator).
To stop a recording one has to send the
ContRecordMessage
command with the tailcut factor set
between 0 and 254. This allows the host controller to cutoff a corresponding number of silence frames of
30 milliseconds. Remark that specifying a tailcut factor will not cutoff any beep tones at the end of a
message. Only silence can be removed at the end.
A recording can also stop automatically. Either by a memory full condition or by a timeout condition. In
both situations, the CHIPSET takes care of properly finishing the recording. In this case, the host
controller doesn’t have to stop the (already finished) recording again by sending the
ContRecordMessage
command. In fact sending this
ContRecordMessage
command (with a
tailcut factor between 0 and 254) can lead to unpredictable results. The CHIPSET remains in all cases in
the
Record
state however. To return to the
Idle
state one has to use the
Idle
command.
Any unstable command can be sent during recording. Since the
GetFrameCounter
command is an
unstable command, you can send this command continuously during a recording without disturbing the
recording itself. The returned result is a number indicating how many frames of exactly 30 milliseconds
that already have been passed since the beginning of the recording. In the case of an auto start recording
the framecounter only starts to run when the recording actually starts. One can use this command as a
progress indicator on an answering machine.
